UPDATE! Scroll down to see a video from the night that they performed!
So this past Saturday was not a very good day at all. Actually as you may have noticed, the past few weeks haven’t been the best, I haven’t been my best.
My mom suggested that my husband and I go see a band perform called Gigantic-Pixies Tribute, at our friend’s place, Randy Now’s Man Cave, make it sort of like a “date night”. Friends of mine were going to a local bar called The H.O.B. afterwards because Saturdays is karaoke night. I had no idea just how much we needed that night until the music started to play. They made me feel so much better!
I love The Pixies, started listening to them in HS and then throughout college to Frank Black’s solo works, and even now. I brought my Olympus mirrorless camera and the Olympus 17mm f1.8 lens and asked if it was ok to take some pictures, and I was told yeah. Normally I tend to bring a Canon full frame with a 16-35mm f2.8L , Canon 50mm f1.8 and at least my Canon 100mm Macro f2.8 lens. But I was so not in the mood, so I went minimalist.
I got to chat with Joe Ujj the lead singer a little bit beforehand and the wife of one of the band members who was sitting in the back. If I am able to, I try to introduce myself, talk “shop” about gear and let them know who I am, that while I am a pro photographer, I’m there for the music and usually when I do this, it’s my night off LOL
The video embedded below gives you an idea of how awesome they are.
Here is a list of what they played, I can’t remember all of it:
Wave of Mutilation
I Bleed
Gigantic
Crackity Jones
Hey
Mr. Grieves
No 13 Baby
Caribou
I’ve Been Tired
Allison
Is She Weird
Manta Ray
Weird At My School(I think)
They played an incredible set, I can’t remember all of the songs, but anything by the Pixies takes me waaay back to a time of HS with my art, theater, hanging out, studying, boyfriends, besties, and then art college if you didn’t know who they were you did now. Their first 4 albums were in constant rotation on my portable Sony CD/Tape player. Yes, I’m old enough to remember when these albums were first released. Wave of Mutilation has 2 versions, the slower one from the UK Surf, was used in the movie with Christian Slater in the 1990 Pump Up The Volume.
The pitch of Joe’s vocals was practically perfect, the drums, guitars and bass were spot on. I mean these guys were incredible, and I hope that they continue on this streak because like I said, they were amazing. Check out their Facebook page and keep looking for a venue and date that they’re playing next. You will not leave disappointed.
Later on, we walked to The H.O.B., had a drink, ate something yummy, and met up with our friends. I normally sing at karaoke but I wasn’t feeling it. However my husband sang Don’t You Forget about Me by Simple Minds(he was great and I’m not just saying this) and my other friend belted out Ballroom Blitz among others, and practically took the house down!
Thanks again for letting me photograph that night everyone, you’re awesome! Check out more photos of musicians by clicking here. My grandfather passed away on Feb. 27th, 2018, he was 97 years old, born in Ponce de Puerto Rico. We buried his ashes with my grandmothers on March 17th, 2018, St. Patrick’s Day in here in Bordentown Cemetery, NJ, next to my great-grandmother. He lived a full and beautiful life, but the world is empty without him here with us.
Ramon was a Ret. Msgr Sgt. in the Army, WWII Vet, I called him Popo and “Handsome Boy”. I loved him and Yaya so very much. If you have been following my FB posts, you would see what I posted. These past few weeks have been very hard for all of us. We’re all now starting to catch up with life a little now. My clients have been so kind, supportive and patient with me, I’m forever grateful for them.
The memorial was beautiful, everything was done through the Bordentown Home For Funerals, who are good friends of ours as well. He had military honors, we had a surprise visit from family in Queens and after the interment, we went to Jester’s Cafe in Bordentown, NJ for a lovely late afternoon lunch with family and close friends.
If you have family and friend who are vets and need long term nursing home care, please look into the Veteran’s Memorial Home in Vineland, NJ. The care that was given to him and everyone there is beyond exceptional and they go beyond the call of duty. This is where Popo lived for 6 years. My mother saw him every weekend, it’s a hour drive each way from us, and my daughter, husband and I went with her as often as we could, so many times to see and be with him. Our daughter’s schedule or mine changed, but we made sure to visit. Our daughter had a relationship with her great-grandfather who simply adored her.
I miss them all, Popo, Yaya, Tata and Grandma and Grandpa Martin. I miss other family members and friends as well. I would rather them be here than anything else.
Thank you everyone….to my clients who have been super patient and kind during this difficult time for me and my family. I’m starting to catch up, we all are. Find a new routine, we still have lots to do and go through. Right now the best thing to do is to keep busy and work.
Here we are with our cousins who came down from Queens.
My husband took video.
At this point I wanted to be with my family, so my mother’s friend Leigh, from our high school, Notre Dame, took my camera and continued to take pictures. Here we are at Jester’s, we know the owners, the food is great and although the day was hard, we were in good spirits. Us cousins minus a few that couldn’t be there, this is our Addams Family image LOL
My friend keeps closing her eyes in every single frame!
Everyone here, even friend is part of our family, thank you.

Francine and Dolores hosted a lunch time professional coaching event to help women focus on their branding, and building professional networks during face to face time with a group of coaches to help them get on track with their careers. It wasn’t an entire day, but more like a taste of what everyone is capable of doing.
Let me first say, this was my very first time that I actually DROVE into the city, like my own car. I’ve driven in Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, I mean, I LOVE TO DRIVE. So on this day, I met up with Dolores and she and I had quite a lot to bring in, and no way was it going to fit in her car. Mine on the other hand is a Subaru Outback Wagon Limited Edition, fully loaded. So we folded down the rear seats, got the cawfee and music going and we were off. I have to say, I’m really thankful that she was there, because she knew where to go. Apparently I drive like a taxi driver 😉 LOL

I love Francine’s Mission Statement:
I focus on the advancement of women. As I like to say, “I activate women for success.”
I do this through my public speaking, writing, curated and micro-networking events as well as specialized skill-building workshops. My focus is not only in personally investing in women but partnering with individuals and organizations that support advancing women to be leaders and influencers in their chosen fields.
As a black woman, I particularly understand and share the experience of many women regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality, having to work twice as hard to accomplish the same success as their male counterparts. I have witnessed and experienced the void of women in positions of leadership and authority in my own career journey.
I am a firm believer in sharing my wealth of knowledge and capital with those around me in turn helping them to excel in their chosen career paths. Thus, a portion of the funds from my events are always provided to philanthropic organizations focused on advancing women.
I believe that it takes many resources and support to move the agenda of advancing women to be influencers and leaders in their respective fields. No one achieves anything alone. I also see it as my responsibility to lend my expertise and experience; financial support; and professional network, as a career woman myself, to help drive this agenda.
Please join me at one of my micro-networking events, specialized skill-building workshops or grab a copy of my book, “The Ultimate Career Pocket Guide” to learn about the unwritten and unspoken skills that no one shares with you, but are essential for your career success.
This shows you the love that happens and how much everyone gets inspired by these events.
After the group photos, I did some super quick business portraits of Francine right before we had to leave the venue. I mean I set up the lights in 2 minutes, and started to shoot in 1 minute. These were her favorites, and to be honest, mine as well 🙂

Below is their book, The Ultimate Career Pocket Guide, I photographed them both for the back cover. To see more on this click on this link.
For this event, I shot using 2 cameras, the Canon Mark 5D III and the Canon 6D with a 70-200mm f2.8L and 16-35mm f2.8L lenses. For the lighting, I brought 4 flashes, they were the Canon 600EX RTs and the Yongous 600EX RTs. The wireless Yongnuo trigger can fire off the Canon flashes, the the Canon can fire off the others. The place looked like it had great natural light, BUT it was raining and overcast all day, so having all of those flashes were actually needed. I set them up on stands throughout the room and manually adjusted them from the trigger on my cameras.
I also brought 2 satin umbrellas and 1 Photek Softlighter. After this event was over, I had a headshot session to do for a client of Dolores. More on that later 🙂
After everything was over, Dolores and I had a nice meal at an Irish Pub on the same block, my husband was able to meet us, since he works in SoHo and then he drove all of us home.
Thanks once again for everyone’s support.
Here are other events I’ve photographed for Dolores and Francine:
